JoyToKey may not be able to control certain softwares on Windows Vista or 7 due to an enhanced security control. If you encounter such cases, please try to launch JoyToKey.exe by opening right-click popup menu and select "Run as administrator". Alternatively, you can also try "Use XP compatible mode" in the same popup menu.
If you're new to JoyToKey, please try to use it for a simple software like Notepad.
1. Start JoyToKey
2. In the right panel, double click "Button 1" row.
3. Press 'a' key to assign 'a'-key to the button, and click "OK".
4. Open Notepad. (NOTE: DO NOT terminate JoyToKey yet. Instead, you can minimize JoyToKey and it'll be kept in task tray)
5. While the cursor is inside Notepad window, please press button 1 of your joystick. 'a' character should appear in Notepad.
You may want to check and recalibrate the center of your joystick. Please go to the joystick property from Windows control panel (or you can go to JoyToKey menu, "Configuration" -> "Calibrate joystick property"). In game controller property page, please check and re-calibrate the center of your stick.
You can also change the threshold for the stick input in JoyToKey Right-panel -> Preferences -> Threshold for input
